august 26, 2011

score card:  scruff 2,521 points - crickets 0 but she is very helpful with the keyboard on this computer...see more news below

we have been bombarded this week - delightfully so.  the blackbird books/charts arrived yesterday - amazing and just nan is due in this morning - more of amazing - i just finished helping annie get the mail out and have to get this update finished now because we have guests arriving when the shop opens.  so...madly dashing...with lists and more finishing stuff to be done...it's going to be a busy day and weekend...and i had better get cracking.

ashley (our graduate) left for san diego state nursing program yesterday - she's on to college and her sister kayla remains here with us on work studies as she enters her junior year.

so - here's the story:

monday evening bruce comes to me and tells me that scruff's mama is around the neighborhood again and it appears she has had another litter (do the math - vet thinks scruff was born somewhere betweeen 03/15 and 04/01 and the new ones are already eating kibble).  anyway - she had taken the FOUR kittens into the garage across the street for safety.  father not home across the street - 18 year old boy without a clue - i went over and checked them all, fed mama and asked him please to keep them in garage overnight and i would be back on tuesday evening with a plan, ointment for eyes, kitty milk, etc.

you guessed - father came home - refused to let them stay in the garage for the night, put them outside in a box in the flowerbed and of course scruff's mama couldn't have that so she moved 'em.  i didn't know about this until i went and knocked on the door tuesday evening with my big box of kibble, ointment, gloves, kitty milk, etc - much like flipping florence nightengale.  box still in the flower bed - kittens and mama gone.  bruce saw mama wednesday outside in the front yard so here i am, crawling under all the bushes, worrying that somebody would call the police about the weird woman crawling thru the landscaping up and down the court.  finally gave up and went inside for dinner, bruce put dry food by the mailboxes and i went back out at dusk just hoping.  we have possums and raccoons in our neighborhood and i was so worried about the kits.  my neighbor 2 doors down was out petting her tuxedo cat - i asked jane if she had seen a beautiful white calico - well, long story short - they were all in her backyard safe and sound.

so...scruff's mama has an appointment with dr. mike on monday morning, the four kits have also been funded by project X for neuter when they are old enough and they are quite happy and content in jane's back yard until we get mama in on monday...the kits will eventually come out from under the deck when they get hungry...unless somebody has any good ideas for me because the deck is the size of texas and i fear this is going to be quite the challenge

i have told scruff she has half brothers/sisters and she doesn't much care - she's quite content asleep on my desk at the moment...the kittens are beautiful...three butterscotch and cream and one black and cream...

truly this town and their attitudes toward animals makes me just raving insane...but there will be no more kittens coming from scruff's mama...and i will find homes for the little monsters under the deck and we will put an end to this insanity - at least on a small level.

and...that was just ONE of our crisis interventions this week - annie and i are getting quite good at this ;)

standing down off my soapbox...but still growling - farming mentality...don't take care of their responsibilities...mumbling

have a great weekend...my husband is escorting me to ikea on monday (after we drop scruff's mama off for an overnight with dr. mike.

august 18, 2011

running, running...hurry up, wait, hurry up, wait some more...shovel crickets out the front and back door - all the one-hopper mutants go out the back door (we should have some very strange crickets out there if they pro-create and all the "whole" or two hopper crickets go out the front and scruff finds more to play with and annie has "toweled" up the other backdoor so that the one legged hoppers don't come in again from the back flower bed.  scruff's very most favorite condition for those crickets is stiff, on their backs with no hoppers because then they really go sliding across the floor when batted...yep...life here at elegant stitch...but wait...we have to hurry up to wait some more.

books are coming, stuff is coming, fabrics, threads and trims are coming...it's all coming and i think the pipelines from all points are just all stuff to the gills with stuff that's "coming" and we are...you guessed it...waiting to hurry up to wait to hurry up...

from a pearl's perspective - our 2011 breast cancer piece (see the front page) - i have exactly 13 kits left...and that is the end of it...no more fabric...so if you want one and you haven't gotten around to ordering it or you just figure - it's not october yet - well, honestly - yes it is...i can't get/make/manufacture/create/or do anything else when these run out - there just ain't no more fabric to be had...and then they were gone...poof...i'm done with that now.

so...this is what the trucks have dumped off to us so far...and we're still awaiting the brown truck today...maybe...but then again...we're waiting to hurry to wait to hurry...so maybe not...

prairie moon - we just love these - but then, we love barb and sue and the charts are just an added attraction...and all is good

i love this chart and i am going to do it on a different color fabric with the beautiful weeks dye works threads and i am going to use my own antique buttons - don't we all have a million buttons that we just love!!!  if you "need" the button pack - it's a special order and $54.00 and we would be delighted to order it for you - but some of my antique buttons just found a new place to live on this sampler

lori markovic's new sampler - we are very excited - we will be doing the three part sampler from la d da which is a gorgeous reproduction with lori's twist entitled margaret cottam age 9.  this piece is inspired by a little girl named margaret cottam who stitched this piece at the age of 9 in 1807.  it will start in october coming in three parts at $8.00 per chart - it starts from the bottom up, then the middle and then the top; it uses 8 skeins of weeks dye works and it worked on weeks dye works linen - either 30, 35 or 40 count - that one is totally up to you.  obviously we will give you all the best price/cut on the fabric - annie and i have to figure that out when i've finished this - we've got our initial order of all the fabric/charts/threads in already and now we will just update as need be.  it is very, very swell and here's a little tiny peekie and we are taking signups starting ... now!!

we just love these colors...so beautiful

daisy buchanan celebrated her third birthday yesterday - she treated both her brothers to quite the feast at mcdonalds - chicken mcnuggets - oh yum - i had three sets of eyes drilling holes in me - even broken into quarter pieces those chickens just would not cool down fast enough mama!!!  gatsby, nickolas and daisy are looking forward to celebrating gatsby's birthday next month...and the kids at the drive-thru just laugh.

tomorrow is red velvet cake fro-yo at the yogurt mill - so either bruce goes early in the morning for me or i stop on the way home tomorrow night because tonight is gas in the car night and it will be very pleasant to fill my car for $3.65.9 per gallon - and maybe something well under 15 gallons will not cost over $60.00 - how fun would that would be...

scruff had her surgery on monday - doggers went for bathies and scruff went for surgery - spending the night with dr. mike and daddy brought her back here on tuesday morning.  dids told her she "smelled" like the vet and was full of distain and made sure scruff knew it and then,  whacked her a few times just to let scruff know who was still "in charge" here.

our kelly came home yesterday from spending six weeks in chicago - she starts her second year of teaching next week and is going to spend much time this fall applying to about ten different law schools all over the united states...so we will have another lawyer in our midst...as she starts on 3 more years of "school".

next year's teachers/weekends - well, we have had quite a reaction to our two weekend instructors for next year... (see inserted paragraphs) and if you are interested in either - please email so i can put your name in our folder - our class with betsy morgan already appears to be close to sold out and lori markovic is in about the same condition... and we are so thrilled by the response...

workshops for 2012  i am in the process of updating the calendars for next year...but i can tell you that we are just too excited about our workshops for next year.  april's workshop is the weekend of april 20/21 and our very talented teacher is coming from wisconsin - lori markovic of la d da.  lori has an incredible talent - she takes the most ordinary of things and turns them into something magical and is a terrific designer as well.  the extraordinary talent and a little paint, some seam tape, a few tacks, a little fabric - poof - it's an amazing thing and i have given her carte blanc to play as she sees fit and create something wonderful and fun for us to do.

our october workshop is with betsy morgan of virginia
casket etui
i had the absolute pleasure of taking a class from betsy in june in sacramento with my ega guild - truly an amazing experience - professional, beautiful kits, one of the best teachers i have ever had - and i, moi, me - actually left with a piece finished - and there will be some pre-stitching (about 3 - 4 hours worth) and everything is just truly amazing!!!  all the details are being worked out - we are over the moon that she adjusted her schedule for us and i for one am so very excited about next october 5,6 & 7.

so...i'm out of here - i have to go hurry up to wait for something...all of that will come to me in a blinding flash and tomorrow is stocking and ornament and burl wood box day - everything is cut out and cording made - so it's assembly day here...and if we don't have too many "fire drills" i might actually get something accomplished or so i'm hoping.  between fire drills and escorting one legged hopper crickets out to the the back flower beds - it can certainly fill up a girl's day.

enjoy your weekend...it's all good...can you BELIEVE that it's two weeks until labor day weekend - i give up - where did the summer go???

august 11, 2011

too much going on...have to hop, skip and jump and then head off into the wild blue...

so...here we go:

market - no, we are not going to baltimore market.  many many reasons why we are not going - time of year, 6,000 miles round trip, school starting, it's been a tough year for annie and i and we are both just getting our feet back under us...so we decided to take a "pass" for this market.  HOWEVER, everything has been ordered, it's either on a truck and on the way or it's going to be shipped within the next week - and yes, we have all the new threads coming, we have new charts coming, we have books coming, it's all coming...and most of what is coming - we wouldn't have brought home with us anyway...so hang in with us - i will put it up on the updates as soon as it arrives...just nan, prairie moon, etc and so on

crickets - it seems here in modesto we have a mutant species of crickets.  we go in cycles here in town with different critters - daddy-long-legs in the spring because they eat the mosquito eggs and mid-july and august appear to be cricket time.  but, every single one that we sweep up because they are stiff, or that we pick up and take out to the front flower beds seems to be missing a hopper leg.  EXCEPT that on further inspection - the hopper leg is usually detached and somewhere else on the floor - you guess it - the white terror office assistant!!!  those crickets are magical and fun while both hopper legs are attached...but become a little less fun when the detachment takes place - and when they roll over on their backs and assume the "stiff" position - no longer fun.  she is sound asleep on my office floor - in exactly the same position as i showed you last update...except facing the other way - it's been a very busy cricket morning in her world...and i will take up the broom when i am finished this and clean up after her.  monday is her surgical appointment and that is going to take some juggling because the three doggers are scheduled for a bathie on one end of town and the little miss is scheduled for her surgical appointment at the other end of town - and you guessed it - exactly at the same time...and that doesn't even begin to discuss pissing her off when i pick up all the food and water late sunday night...she won't be half as mad as didnot - dids will have wasted away to a mere shadow of herself within the first 15 minutes of being deprived.

so...off i go to help annie out front - and do the cricket dance - mama is taking tad (the youngest) off to the dept. of motor vehicles this afternoon for his driving permit...i remember when he was 4 and hiding behind her pant leg the first day she came into the store all those years ago...  he is truly a credit to her...

enjoy your weekend - school started here on wednesday - ashley is off to san diego state nursing program in a week and a bit...they grow so fast...and time does not stand still for any of us i fear.

august 4, 2011

well, my office assistant is sound asleep on the floor in my office - has been that way for over an hour...had a very hard play morning...and annie has introduced her to catnip toys - which just wears her out - she was as wild as a march hare yesterday...all over the place - all you saw was a streak of white under everything...and we had a grand time of "chairs" out in the front under the big white table...did you know that you can get all the way around the perimeter of that table just by traversing the chairs underneath - it's truly amazing - when you weigh almost five pounds.  wpe1.jpg (99851 bytes)

lots going on around here - new things are starting to show up from all the vendors who are not going to be at market...we are very excited and love them all.

so...until next week...when we might have some more additions to our private collection pages (am hoping for some wool felt very soon) and our lovely brenda keyes samplers  i will wish you a lovely weekend...our kids start back to school next wednesday (the high schools here in town) with the little ones right behind them...i just hope the weather stays reasonable for them...hard to believe the summer is over - the peaches are still hanging on the trees - i think the canneries will be working far into october this year because everything is so far behind.

enjoy and thanks for visiting.

july 28, 2011

i've had an office assistant for the better part of a week now...every single time i sit down at this desk...she magically appears - leaping to the top of my lap and then taking a gentle stroll to the top of the desk - only to sprawl across the keyboard and bite me when i try and use the mouse...

she and dids play "romp the house" in the morning for at least an hour...and dids body slammed her the other day with the full girth of her 25 plus pounds...all you saw was vanilla legs and a striped tail sticking out from underneath this large black/white lump...

we have finally updated the private collection page - merely a click away:
PRIVATE COLLECTION.  all the new items are exclusive to elegant stitch and are in limited supply so please, please...i can't get anymore when these are gone and i will do everything i can to keep this page current.  we think these are pretty swell.

baby born last friday - 7 pounds 6 ounces - everybody doing just great including annie...he's beautiful from the pictures...and annie is going to go spend the weekend with them and probably do 8 loads of laundry just to keep her hand in the game.

i got almost all the loose feathers/mystery samplers out - annie was quite impressed with what wasn't here when she returned on tuesday - so i think i did okay...

we have some new things and now that we have calmed down a little bit - we will have christmas in july on the private collection page next thursday, july 28th.  i could have done it today but i have measurements to take and one or two more pictures that didn't turn out as clear as i wanted them...so give me a little bit more time and it will be good next week...i promise.

the kitchen/breakfast room are painted and now i'm moving on  to the family room.  doggers go in for bathies on monday and our gray persian joins them for a complete shave job - she mats up horribly and the only saving grace is sharon's clippers...she is quite a sight when it's all over - kind of looks like a poodle gone horribly wrong.

and...it's a hard life here at elegant stitch...

photo.JPG (556034 bytes) obviously life is tough - she's growing like a little weed and is scheduled for her "lady surgery" in mid-august...how did that happen so quickly...she's doing the "long drink of water" growth spurt right now...that girl is all legs and ear tufts!!!  we have a chenille toy that she plays with - the "squiggle" - came in monday - it now has 1 eye and she tried to drown it in the big water dish out front.  it got a bath, dried out and is fluffy again...until the next drowning takes place...we have no clue where the other 3 squiggles are - but, i'll bet she knows and is just not telling.

enjoy the weekend - off to do some more photographing so i can play with the private collection and to clean up the commitments i have for photos and information for the newest line of lady dot items coming soon.  and, to the mid-west...i'm really, truly sorry we sent that horrible weather your way...we didn't have the sticky...so we are not responsible for that - but we are responsible for the heat...and it is truly ugly...we're easy today - about 98 degrees...

lgm and everybody here in california

july 14, 2011

yes, we have some new things - but the world blew out this week - and the entire list of things "to get done" turned into a totally different list sometime between monday afternoon and right now (6:00 p.m. on thursday).

it's a little crazy here right now - i'm doing solo with my husband helping me tomorrow and saturday - annie is off because daughter is scheduled for a c-section tomorrow about 12:30 p.m. to deliver the little boy grandchild...grammie is doing grammie things in the waiting room with the 1st one who is there waiting to meet her brother and then annie is spending the night in hospital so new daddy can take daughter home and have her sleep in her own bed, etc., etc....so...with mystery sampler and loose feathers arriving on our doorstep late this afternoon - it looks like a wicked weekend for moi.

i have pictures to take, i have private collection stuff to put up, i need to shoot myself in the foot...i have errands to run and phone calls to have...and all of this while the octopus in me multi-tasks...should be quite interesting ;)

anyway - hang with me - i will get it done...and we will get an update done sometime very shortly - sometime between painting the walls in my kitchen (which are now primed and ready to go - 'cause i did ceiling and some walls on monday afternoon) changing out buttons on 4 shirts i bought last night (truly some ugly buttons on them) and 200 other things that have managed to make the list and haven't been taken care of yet.  at least i have gas in my car - but holy cow - it's quite filthy and desperately needs a bathie - but that's after i get to the fabric store for finishing fabric for 2 stockings that WILL be finished by the end of july and some more listings of things on etsy...and some facebook stuff...lordie lordie love a duck...and it's supposed to get easier as we get older - HAH!!!

the devil cat is now fully 4 pounds - tipping the scales at 4.0.0 on tuesday when we digitally weighed her...she had a busy morning - she and didnot played 3 games of "box" and then she played two more serious games with the framing box packing...and at least 2 hours of serious "squiggle" time - long skinny chenille toys that squiggle/wiggle...her bright orange one is almost pulled apart...i keep finding pumpkin colored chenille on the floor...

off to finish up a few projects and then head home and hopefully start tomorrow a.m. about 4:00 so i can get some of this stuff done...  no rest for the wicked and somehow somebody thinks i've been very, very wicked ;)

be back later - hang with me...

it's stinking hot here - it's been stinking hot here for a week and we are tired of it and hopefully tomorrow (or so they say) it is going back into the 90's and a parade, a party and a happy dance will be put forward.  i told a friend last night - getting into the car at the end of the day is like getting into a roasting pan with a lid...and popping yourself into a 500 degree oven.  when i left last night - the car temp registered 108 when i turned it on...took almost 3 blocks to get cool air to come out of the vents...ugly hot...but it's almost over (for now) ;)

we have some new things this week and we are very happy with them...so, before this office heats up still further and the poor air conditioners wheeze and cry and stamp their collective feets...here we go...

july 01, 2011

not much on the horizon today except triple digits and ugly weather all weekend and into the 4th...but it's all good and we are moving and shaking around here getting things ready to put up on the private collection page and i'm shooting for july 15th so we'll see how all of this shakes out - we shall see indeed.

the wild kitten girl now has engaged didnot in a daily morning game...hide-n-seek in a large flat box that i have left on the warehouse floor - it's seems to be a daily game now and i can't believe she has actually "inspired" didnot to move any faster than a rather slow walk...but they are now friends...and the morning romps are quite fun to audience!!

our celebration of the 4th is a fiber sale - in stock only please - by fax or email and this fiber sale runs thru thursday, july 7th.

i will also have pictures of "from a pearl's perspective" up next week.  everything is completed and we are 1/2 way finished kitting...and now i can get a picture so you can see all the goodies and the final presentation.

annie's tad graduated from driving school this week...mr. bear ran the afternoon taxi service to pick him up with the doggers riding shotgun and nickolas has a new friend and is quite content to sit right next to tad on the seat and let tad give him pets until bruce drops tad off at home.

other than that - nothing much going on until the hoffman email shows up this afternoon and since i kinda missed yesterday on the update...i needed to get this in today early before the chaos started in earnest.

blackbird loose feathers.jpg (40465 bytes) loose feathers summer.jpg (64868 bytes) blackbird loose feathers - starting mid-july - 3 part series with bonus charts in each of three books...should be here pretty quickly - we are very excited.  (all information is right below this) and remember that you need to sign up for the new series - we don't want to make a presumption that you want to remain on automatic for the new series.

have a safe, happy and wonderful 4th weekend.  it doesn't seem possible that it's the 4th already but that's what the calendar says too so it must be true.  off we go - enjoy and have a great weekend.
